IRV’S LEADERS COMMITTED TO RICS’ INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS OF BEST PRACTICE
RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) is an independent professional organization with a longstanding history. Established in 1868 in the United Kingdom, and royally chartered in 1881, the organization sets international standards of best practice for professionals involved with the complete life cycle of property – “from land management and measurement, through planning, environmental impact assessment and investment appraisal, to managing the construction process and advising on the most efficient use of buildings.” RICS strives to “regulate and promote the profession, maintain the highest educational and professional standards, protect clients and consumers through a strict code of ethics, and provide impartial advice, analysis and guidance. Today, the RICS organization has more than 100,000 members, known as “chartered surveyors,” around the globe.
Members who have demonstrated a certain level of expertise are noted by one of three designations following their name – FRICS (Fellow of RICS), MRICS (Member of RICS), AssocRICS (Associates of RICS). “Fellows” (FRICS) are “leaders in their field, people who have undertaken notable projects or made a special contribution to the profession” and are considered “major achievers” in their careers. “Members” (MRICS) and “Associates” are individuals who maintain exemplary standards in their valuation profession and present a combination of professional and/or vocational experience; without a degree, the highest level of membership available is the “Associate.” All surveyors are subject to RICS professional standards, which include “mandatory rules, best practice guidance and related commentary,” documented in the “Red Book.” In addition, RICS Valuer Registration is open to all qualified individuals who perform Red Book valuations and are especially committed to providing the absolute highest level of service in the industry.
RICS provides an invaluable service to clients seeking property valuation in a world beset with drastically different degrees of professional standards and best practices. No matter where they are located, FRICS, MRICS, AssocRICS, and Registered Valuers are bound to a comprehensive, consistent, and highly professional set of valuation standards giving clients an unshakable confidence in their abilities and ethics.
